A friend of mine is on Starband and using a WRT54G router. They are having problems with a neighbor (line of sight) accessing their network then downloading movie after movie. Needless to say they are always getting Fapped because of this. They have asked him several times to stop, but he won't!

I have been researching this and think I found a solution for them. Am I correct in assuming that they can get his Mac address and IP, then go into Security tab in router control, enter that info, then disable 24/7. Will that block him from using their wireless system, but allow others to continue using it?? Do they also need to have WEP enabled?

One other question, could this be done just the opposite by listing all the MAC addys of the computers you want to allow (enable, 24/7) and that would block anyone that is not on the list?

Thanks so much for the help!

Allowing only certain MAC addresses or blocking specific ones would probably only stop this guy for awhile. It is pretty easy to capture MAC addresses and then spoof them.

Using this in combination with encryption would work better, although this also can be broken.

WEP is the older encryption method that has fewer compatibility problems, but is also much easier to break. There are readily available tools you can download to do this.

WPA personal is much more secure, but can also be broken.

I would recommend starting with WPA personal and if all the allowable computers don't have a problem, then stick with that. If some of your allowed users keep getting disconnected with WPA, then go to 128-bit WEP.

Here is a link to a document that describes how to configure the router for StarBand:

Thanks Barb, that gives him some options. Fortunately, I do not think anyone up here is computer literate enough to know how to do anything like you mentioned, but he can always try the simple way of just blocking the mac address and if that does not work, then go on to the security!

Thanks so much for the help!

In that case, I would recommend at least enabling WEP in addition to the MAC filtering. It is described in the document I reference for configuring for StarBand.

It has almost no issues, once it is set up ... other than the fact you can download a utility to break it. ;)
