Got a problem with Linksys WRT54G. The set up is fine because it's working fine for my computer, but it won't work for my daughter's computer. Hers only works when we're directly wired to the wireless device. When it's just sitting there, it says she's connected to local and internet, but when she tries to connect wirelessly, it drops to 'local area only' and refuses to connect.

I'm thinking it may be her network adapter but I'm not sure how to go about reinstalling it. Or is it something else?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

It's possible that the WEP key was entered incorrectly. It will usually still say connected, but it won't allow the user on the Internet.

Use the View Available Wireless Networks window and first click "Disconnect" and then "Connect".

This will usually again ask for the WEP key. I would enter the 26-digit key directly ... you can connect to the router to "copy" the key and then use <Control>-V to paste the copied key when prompted.

Or, use notepad to type the key in clear text, so you can see it. Then, copy the text and paste it in when prompted.

Let me know if this doesn't help and we'll look elsewhere, but this is the most likely cause of what you describe.

Nope. No go. I'm WPA encrypted and changed the 26 digits to another password. I can disconnect and connect her machine to the wireless, but it doesn't connect to the internet. I'm doing exactly the same stuff with her computer that I do with mine but hers won't get to the net. *sigh*

What to try next??

Well, the fact that she can get connected says that it is probably not the card or driver.

But, have you confirmed her computer does actually connect?

When her computer says she is connected wirelessly, go to All Programs => Accessories => Command Prompt and enter the command "ipconfig" and confirm that she receives an address from the router ... likely something like 192.168.1.100 or 101.

If the address starts with 169, then the connection isn't an authenticated one and she will not be able to access the Internet.

Her stuff says:

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Link-local IPv6 Address: fe80::c418:febb:87ac:7dd4%9
IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State: Media Disconnected
Connection-specific DNS Suffix:

My computer says:

Ethernet Adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
IP Address: 192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

**********************************

So, they're not the same. Don't know what it all means or what to change to get hers to match mine (which works).

What do I check next? How do I change hers to 192.168.1.102? And shouldn't all her stuff be under the ethernet heading, not the local heading? I'm confused as always!

Thanks for your help so far, btw. Hope we can get her up and running soon!

Just ran Windows Network Diagnostics and reset the network adapter, but it says that a problem still exists and that it cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server (68.186.75.216). Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response. Don't quite understand what all that means, but she's still not able to connect.

It is important that every IP "host" have a unique "IP address". Note that they are on the same IP subnet (network) as the router, which is the default gateway.

The router's IP address is 192.168.1.1. All of these host addresses are on the 192.168.1.0 subnet.

Both IP addresses are wireless connections. That is the key word in the two. The slightly different wording is related to the fact that one PC is XP and one is Vista.

All of this tells us is that her computer should be able to access the Internet if yours can: They are both consistently configured.

Since her PC is Vista, there is one possibility and that is the IPv6, which is enabled on Vista. Go to the Manage Network Connections window, right-click the wireless connection and select "Properties".

Uncheck the box by Internet protocol IPv6 and "OK/Close" your way out. Reboot the computer and see if it helps.

Another thing to check is whether a proxy is set - Go to the Internet Explorer Tools menu and select "Internet Options" at the bottom. Click on the Connections tab and then on the LAN Settings button.

Nothing should be checked on this page.

Okay, I'll wait for the results on these steps.

OK. Clicked off the IPv6 thing and nothing checked on her LAN settings per your instructions, and did a restart. Now it says 'local only'. Won't connect.

What now?

Next thing to try is to again right-click the wireless connection, but this time select "Disable" from the list, instead of Properties.

Then, right-click it again and select "Enable".

This will sometimes kick start things.

If it still won't connect, again select "Properties" and then click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click "Properties".

Make sure that on both the top and the bottom sections, the choice is the one with "automatic" in it.

a MILLION thanks, Barb. You're awesome! It was that last thing, the properties on the TCP/IP being both on automatic that made it work. I never never would have found it without your help!

Thanks!! We're up and running on both computers now!

Wonderful! :)

I'm going to change the title of the thread, if it's OK.
