I let my neighbor share my internet computer in the evenings thru wireless. He has a laptop and his teenage daughter has a laptop. I need to adjust my router setting so she has limited access times (otherwise she sits on the computer late into the night), but leave him with access at any time.

I found 2 sections, but am having trouble getting anything that will work. I have a Linksys WRT54GS router, ver 7.2.

Under Wireless is a section called Wireless Mac Filter which you can enable/disable and evidently set filters here - problem is even though I click "enable" it switches back to "disable" immediately. Is there a trick to this or maybe this is not even the place I need to be???

The other section I found is "Access Restrictions" I can enable this one and input a mac addy, specific ip, or ip range. I tried setting up a rule using the daughters mac addy and an ip range. I tried setting a specific time range to deny, but got an error that the ending time had to be larger (ie: tried 11pm to 6am). I then tried setting it to allow access from 6am to 11pm and that one appeared to work. I did not set up a rule for my neighbor thinking that this would only affect that specific mac addy.

When I checked with my neighbor, it did not affect his daughter at all, and he could not connect at all until I just did away with the rule and disabled the feature?? Should I have not put in the mac addy and an ip range together? Or can you think of anything I am doing wrong?

I have read all the documentation on it that they give, but that is really basic. Have tried to call Linksys, but I have a difficult time understanding anyone with a heavy accent over the phone and do not want to be rude and ask to speak with someone else with the problem is my hearing, not their accent.

Would appreciate any help you can give me on this. Thanks again!!

First of all, the Wireless Mac Filter is not what you are looking for.

You do not want to specify IP addresses, because those can change every time the PC is rebooted. This could be what happened and why the father was blocked instead of the daughter.

Access Restrictions, by time of day should do it. The fact that your neighbor was blocked instead of his daughter could also mean you just blocked the wrong MAC address. If not specifying any IP addresses doesn't do it, then, try blocking the other MAC address?

As for the time of day, if you specify 6 am to 11 pm, you have blocked access for the entire day, from 6 in the morning until 11 a night. It allows access from 11 pm until 6 am ... Not quite what you wanted. ;)

This should work: Define two policies ... Select "Deny" and specify her MAC address for both. Set the time from 11 pm to 11:55 pm for one policy and from 12 am to 6 am on the second.

I tested and this is accepted by the router. It does leave a 5 minute access hole, from 11:55 - midnight, but if it works, it is likely the only way to do it.

Let me know!

Thanks Barb! Will leave off the ip address and just go with the mac addy. I will use your recommendation and see what happens. She is gone for a couple of weeks but will let you know how it worked when she gets back! Thanks again!
